In any industry the pursuit of continuing and higher education establishes it as a profession. The practitioners are exposed to methods of operation from many sources and can implement them in their personal practice. The fire service is no different except that the pursuit of higher education is relatively new to this industry. There are many benefits to this endeavor the most important of which is safety. The service benefits from the research conducted by individuals and organizations that results in best practices. This eliminates the need to re-create the wheel and saves lives that would be lost through trial and error. Many departments resist change and see the introduction of new methods as a threat to the way things have always been done. The US Fire Administration (USFA) National Fire Academy (NFA) has introduced Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) Program to bring the benefits of higher education to the fire service nationwide. Higher education has many benefits including being able to receive higher certifications. Many of the courses for the fire service are free and offered online. The USFA NFA also has programs in place to share organizational and training methods: |
